4.As we recently discovered, there is a Stepmother’s Day,though it is not on any official holiday calendar. So,it would be safe to assume that there is a similar day for stepdads, too.Right? Well,it depends on what you read.A Google search brought up posts that say,for example,“It’s on father’s day--father’s day is for fathers, step—fathers and people who are like fathers to you-it’s a day for making father figures feel special.”Further searching found a Stepfather’s DayFacebook page that says,“The unofficial Stepfather’s Day is the fourth Sunday of June.”Unfortunately,as of the publishing of this article, only 30 people have “liked” the page.Considering that studies show 3.3 million men,or 11.1%of U.S.fathers,live with at least one stepchild, that’s only a drop in the ocean. It’s interesting to note that there is a National Grandparents’ Day.President Jimmy Carter signed it into law in 1978.Law! While grandparents are undoubtedly special people in our children’s lives, they are often seen as the most loving family members. But what about the stepparents? The stepparents are the ones who are often the outsiders, the ones who have to endure the hurtful “You’re not my dad!” or “You’re not my mom!” And yet they never give up.They do their best to overcome the inherent challenges of stepparents and be role models for their stepchildren. These unsung(未被颂扬的)family heroes deserve “official” days of honor.Perhaps if we are loud enough,President Obama, who had a stepfather himself, will sign into law NationalStepmother’s Day and National Stepfather’s Day.Are you with me? Follow me and get your voice heard. How cool it would be if we could make this happen! What is the reason for setting an official holiday for stepparents?

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities.Of course.there have always been people who have looked foradventure-those whohave climbed the highest mountains, explored unknown parts of the world or sailed insmall boats across the greatestoceans. Now,however, there are people who seek an immediate thrill from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jumpfrom a high place(perhaps a bridge,or a hot-air balloon)200 meters above the groundwith an elastic rope tied to your ankles,You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour till therope stops you from hitting the ground. It is estimated that 2 million people around theworld have now tried bungee jumping.Other activities as risky as bungee jumping involvejumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs. Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life inmodern societies has become sate and boring. Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly under threat. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily becured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.

Nowadays, according to many people, lite offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively safe environment, they buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill.the answer for some of these people is to seek danger in activities such as bungee jumping.3.In bungee jumping.you()

11.It is customary for adults to forget how hard and dull and long school is. The learning by memory of all the basic things one must know is a most incredible and unending effort. Learning to read is probably the most difficult and revolutionary thing that happens to the human brain and if you don’t believe that, watch an illiterate adult try to do it. School is not easy and it is not for the most part very much fun, but then, if you are very lucky, you may find a real teacher. Three real teachers in a lifetime is the very best of my luck. My first was a science and math teacher in high school, my second, a professor of creative writing at Stanford, and my third was my friend and partner, Ed Ricketts. My three had these things in common: They all loved what they were doing. They did not tell; they catalyzed a burning desire to know. Under their influence, the horizons sprung wide and fear went away and the unknown became knowable. But most important of all, the truth, that dangerous stuff, became beautiful and very precious. I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery. She aroused us to shouting, book waving discussions. She had the noisiest class in school and she didn’t even seem to know it. We could never stick to the subject. Our speculation ranged the world. She breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies. I can tell my son who looks forward with horror to fifteen years of drudgery that somewhere in the dusty dark a magic may happen that will light up the years if he is very lucky.Among his teachers, left him a very deep impression

12.Passage FiveMark Twain is one of America's much-beloved authors, creating imaginative and humorousclassics for children and adults alike, such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,The Prince and ThePauper, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.Twain passed away in 1910,leaving behind a treasure of great literature. But now,100 years after his death,he'll have a brand-new book on the shelves: a three-volume autobiography.Twain hasn't been keeping busy in his tomb:it was his wish that publishers wait until 100years after his death to publish his memoirs(自传),which he spent the last decade of his lifeworking on.The autobiography totals more than 5,000 pages, and likely won't be all sunshine and roses.Itseems that Twain harbored some bitterness against former girlfriends and ex-friends.He also writes negatively about politicians of his day, such as Teddy Roosevelt. It's likely that he requested such a long lead time for the memoirs because he didn't want to hurt the feelings of anyone mentioned in this work.Although small sections of the memoirs have been previously published, the autobiography hasnever been available in full, and should provide great insights into the man behind the classicbooks. The first volume of the set will be available in November, and the trilogy is being published by the University of California,Berkeley."There are so many biographies of Twain, and many of them have used bits and pieces of theautobiography,"editor Robert Hirst told The Independent.“But biographers pick and choose what bits to quote.By publishing Twain's book in full,we hope that people will be able to come to their own complete conclusions about what sort of a man he was.”54.What does the underlined word“trilogy”in Paragraph 4 mean?

13.What can you do to recall your dreams more often and interpret them more clearly? The expertsoffer these suggestions: Develop an idea. Before you go to sleep, consciously think about a topicor a person you’d like to dream about. Raise a question that’s troubling you and see how yourdream responds to it. Keep track. Next to your bed, place a pen and some paper, or a tape recorderor a laptop(笔记本电脑) , to record your dreams as soon as you wake up. Try to wake up naturally, without the help of an alarm clock or barking dog that can interrupt your dream cycle. If yourschedule doesn’t allow you to sleep in during the week, begin your dream journey on a weekendor during a vocation. Wake up slowly. For the first moment after you wake up, lie still and keepyour eyes closed, because your dream may be connected to your body position while you slept.Try to recall the dream and then store it in your memory by giving it a name like “Late for an Exam”or “My Dare with Ashley Judd” when you rise, immediately wrote down as many images, feelingand impressions as you can. Connect the dots. To better interpret your dreams, try to makeconnection between your recalled dreams and recent events. Do you recognize people from thepresent or past? Can you detect any themes from the dream? Look for partners over severaldreams that might help explain an individual dream. Change the outcome. If you have nightmareshappening again and again that make it different to sleep, try to change the endings. 15.Years ago, a cigarette commercial asked if you were smoking more, but enjoying it less. That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn't work, we get the problem. In our extremely hurried search for satisfaction, we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach. The truth is simple; so simple it is hard to believe.Satisfaction lies with less, not with more.Yet, we pursue the myth that this thing, or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek. Arthur Lindman, in his very effective book, "The Harried Leisure Class," described the uselessness of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time.He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But, ironically, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them.Carried to an extreme, he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago, and his prediction seems more accurate every year. Lindman of course, is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago.It is better, he wrote, to have less, but enjoy it more. If you would like to enjoy life more, I challenge you to experiment with me.How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on? The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up, the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you.You must try it for yourself.[单选题] Lindman wrote his book __.

Passage Three

Eating an apple a day doesn' t keep the doctor away, but it does reduce the amount of trips you make to the drug store per year. That ' s according to a new study that investigates whether there' s any truth in the old saying.A team of researchers led by Dr Matthew Davis, of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, asked 8,399 participants to answer survey questions about diet and health. A total of 753 were apple eaters, consuming at least 149g of raw apple per day. The remaining 7,646 were classed as non-apple eaters. When both groups answered questions on trips to the doctor and trips to the drug store per year, the apple eaters were found to be 27% less likely to visit the druggist for drugs.Trips to the doctor were not significantly affected by apple consumption, though. "Evidence does not support that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. However, the small number of US adults who eat an apple a day does appear to use fewer prescription medications," the study concludes.Apple eaters were also found to be less likely to smoke and be more likely to have a higher educational attainment than non-apple eaters. While apples do not compete with oranges, they docontain some immune (免疫的) system-increasing vitamin C, which may be why apple-eaters visit the druggist less. With over 8mg of vitamin C per medium-sized fruit, an apple can provide roughly 14% your daily recommended intake.Previous studies have also linked apple consumption to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes (二型糖尿病) ,improved lung function and a lower risk of colon (结肠) cancer.44. How many non-apple eaters answered survey questions in the research?

19.Memory is the ability to keep track of things that have happened in the past. Memory really isleaning. One needs memory to ride a bicycle. A dog needs to remember if it is to come when called.Memory is said to be stored in the brain as a “memory trace (记忆痕) .” What makes up this traceis not known. Some scientists believe that certain chemical substances may carry certain memories. For example, one substance, when given to rats, causes them to dear the dark.Other research into memory has to do with how the brain works. Psychologists use three meansto find out how a person remembers. For example, give a person a grocery list. Let the person memorize the list, then put it away. The most natural way to find out how much a person remembers of the grocery list is to ask what he or she remembers. This is called the method of recall. Another method is called recognition. Gibe the person another grocery list. Ask him or her to choose items on the first list from the items that are on only the second list. Often a person will be able to recognize thins that he or she cannot recall. A third method of finding how much a person remembers is called relearning. Here the person is asked to read over the first list. The person will probably learn the list the second time faster than he did the first time. The differencein the time it takes to relearn the list is thought of as a measure of how much a person hasremembered. One way of remembering something is to repeat it many times. Interest is very important. Boring lists of facts are much more difficult to remember than something that we understand and are interested in. Motivation, or wanting to do something, is also important. Motivation is linked with reward. For example, a hungry animal quickly learn how to do something if that action gets the animal food. In humans, wanting to learn is often motivation. The praise of a teacher or the knowledge that an answer is correct is rewarding. The way to pick out the items on the first list from the second is known as_____.
